UTM Equine Centre was established in 1995 and inaugurated by His Highness Tunku Ibrahim Ismail, the son of Sultan Iskandar, Tunku Mahkota Johor on 14 August 1996. It is the first Equine Center established among institutions of higher learning (IPTA) in Malaysia. The main purpose of its establishment was to promote equestrian sports among UTM students and staff and the public in the state of Johor.

UTM through Equine Centre had achieved in creating a successful equestrian sports rider at national and international levels in various disciplines such as Endurance, Show Jumping and Dressage through the ongoing efforts of all parties, including strong support from the top management of the university, the Equestrian Association of Malaysia, and the Council Equine Malaysia. Until now, UTM has successfully hosted the international horse 5 times recognized by the international body, the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI).

The need to increase knowledge in the field of equine and equestrian among those directly involved in sports because it kind of through the concept of Blue Ocean Strategy to upgrade Equine Center became an Equine Academy. The Academy will offer academic programs and courses in equine management as top management wishes to make the Academy’s university as a center of reference, training, and a world-class education through collaboration with universities and institutions from within and outside the country.

Sport riding is one sport that is becoming more popular among all walks of life in this country.
